another essay about love
the drama gave me a lot to think about. Thanks, Zendaya.
This is not a SPOILER!!!!! I promise.
This is simply a reflection — because let me tell you, Zendaya gave me a lot to think about after watching The Drama a week ago. Funny enough, I watched Sinners on Easter Sunday last year and this one around the same time. Maybe different lessons, maybe not — but always something to learn.
Enough introduction. Here are my thoughts.
unconditional love. is it really real?
Being in a house with two parents who have known each other since high school and have been married over 30 years — at 25, you know marriage vows by heart. Maybe not the exact words, but certain phrases are etched in your brain whether you like it or not.
In Sickness and in Health. Til Death Do Us Part.
Forever is a very real thing in so many worlds. Forever — it transcends time. We are one. Despite anything.
You ever listen to a woman talk about love and your heart breaks.
But she loves him.
Like really really loves him.
Something about her soul has found something that resembles home so much she can’t let him go. And as you listen, you wish she would change the address her heart lives at. And then you start to wonder — is unconditional love even plausible?
Until you’re in it.
This is another essay about love. I have too many to count on this page, and I make no apologies for it.
I would add The Drama to a list of beloved romantic comedies — not because it sells a fairytale, but because it offers something rarer: a raw, uncut, sometimes ugly depiction of the question where am I in love? What does it mean to me?
How many times do I start over?
And what does it feel like when we have one conversation and suddenly you see everything I’ve ever been — awkward, uncertain, stuck in an emotional loop I can’t escape — and you bring me back to earth just to ask:
Can we start over? What’s your name?
And then: Are you okay?
Because where was everyone asking that? Sitting with Emma’s situation, with her thoughts, her circumstances — how did she find the light? How long did it take? Is it dark right now?
Maybe love isn’t unconditional. But I’ll say this — whatever the conditions are, they will be tested to their fullest extent. Because I love you. And we can restart as many times as we need to, until I no longer hesitate to say my name and answer yes to every question you might ask me.
Because I want to go to the moon with you.
I could write an entire essay about love, marriage, and loving myself regardless of how I’m perceived — but I think this is it for now. I’ll write the rest in my diary when the next thought comes.
xoxo, maeko
